DevOps Technical Interview.
There are lots of discussions about this topic, so I am gonna give you my 2 cents.
I did some work for a few companies interviewing DevOps specialist around the globe, so here I describe what the best DevOps interview in my opinion is:
I am assuming you already did a code test(if it’s required) or basic hr questions, like ” Which command can I use to change file ownership in Linux?”
A couple of questions which I like to start:
- What is DevOps for you?
- What is CI/CD?
- What is Infrastructure as code and configuration management?
The interviewee has to know what is DevOps! If you have any doubt, I just recommend the article on this website: Link.
Doubts about Infrastructure as code can be found here: IAC
I ask those basic questions to start the interview because I want to know if the interviewee knows what he is applying to.
I wouldn’t say I like to do interviews asking questions waiting for a specific response; I prefer to give scenarios, depending on the response. I ask new questions based on position needs.
Am I going to ask questions about networking or automation? depends on the position needs.
I am always trying to ask questions based on the projects and why they decided to use the x tool instead of the y, or if we use the y tool how would work.
Asking questions about the interviewee’s experience and behavior, I just love STAR method, If you don’t know what is this method, you need to know today!
Star method is a strategy helpful in response to behavioural questions, usually starts with a question like:
- Tell me about a time when…
- Have you ever faced an issue…
- Describe a situation in which you were able to…
STAR means:
Situation – Think of the situation or an event, which you are involved and Describe the context. always remember to use the Who, What, Where, When, and How.
Task – Explain the task and your responsibility in that Situation
Action – Describe the specific actions you did. How did u achieve the task? How you handled.
Result – The result of your action that had been taken.
The next articles will be examples of scenarios which I use and can be changed as needed, maybe it is a light for you.
